چکیده

INTRODUCTION We use new geological and hydrodynamic models to simulate the sea floor deformation and tsunami runup and inundation in Cannon Beach, Oregon (Fig. 1) produced by Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ) earthquakes. We then compare the simulated inundation with inland extent of buried sand sheets inferred to be of tsunami origin. The CSZ exhibits similarities to other subduction zones around the world, particularly the Sunda-Andaman subduction zone. We therefore used the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami to partially guide the design of fault source models. Given the large uncertainties and natural variation possible in the deformation caused by the earthquakes, our main aim here is to minimize these uncertainties and explore the variability by considering multiple geological and geophysical constraints so that meaningful hydrodynamic simulations can be carried out. Therefore we use an ensemble of plausible fault models to test our hypotheses on the past earthquake events, and derive the most likely scenario by comparing the wave runup and maximum inundation as calculated by the model against field observations of extensive sand sheets inferred to record prehistoric tsunami inundation.

Earthquake hazards on the cascadia subduction zone.

Large subduction earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone pose a potential seismic hazard. Very young oceanic lithosphere (10 million years old) is being subducted beneath North America at a rate of approximately 4 centimeters per year. The Cascadia subduction zone shares many characteristics with subduction zones in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, where comparably young oc...

Source Characteristics of Hypothetical Subduction Earthquakes in the Northwestern United States

Historic earthquake sequences on subduction zones that are similar to the Cascadia subduction zone are used to hypothesize the nature of shallow subduction earthquakes that might occur in the northwestern United States. Based on systematic comparisons of several physical characteristics, including physiography and seismicity, subduction zones that are deemed most similar to the Cascadia subduct...

The earthquake and tsunami of 1865 November 17: evidence for far-field tsunami hazard from Tonga

S U M M A R Y Historical reports of an earthquake in Tonga in 1865 November identify it as the only event from that subduction zone which generated a far-field tsunami observable without instruments. Run-up heights reached 2 m in Rarotonga and 80 cm in the Marquesas Islands. Hydrodynamic simulations require a moment of 4 × 1028 dyn cm, a value significantly larger than previous estimates of the...

Time-dependent inversion of three-component continuous GPS for steady and transient sources in northern Cascadia

[1] An approach to invert GPS time series to estimate crustal block rotations, fault locking and strain rates while simultaneously solving for transient slow slip events is described and applied to the northern Cascadia subduction zone. The method can use continuous or survey mode GPS time series or both. I invert 5.6 years of 3-component continuous GPS time series at 53 sites from Cascadia to ...

Episodic tremor and slip on the Cascadia subduction zone: the chatter of silent slip.

We found that repeated slow slip events observed on the deeper interface of the northern Cascadia subduction zone, which were at first thought to be silent, have unique nonearthquake seismic signatures. Tremorlike seismic signals were found to correlate temporally and spatially with slip events identified from crustal motion data spanning the past 6 years. During the period between slips, tremo...
